Sir,
" The latest accident underscores, among others, the Navy’s poor submarine rescue capabilities. It is the result of neglect of safety in its operations. At the root of the problem is the government’s failure to understand the needs of the forces and provide them the required support in terms of equipment and facilities for training ".
This self-contradictory statement, reminded me of VKK Menon's order to the then COAS in 1962 - ' Fire under any circumstance, but fire only in
self-defence ' !
It has already come out in the open that INS Sindhuratna went for her Task II trials with ' LIFE EXPIRED BATTERIES '.
It was still fitted with the batteries whose service life had expired 15 months ago. The ship didn’t get new batteries because the procurement was delayed by the MoD.
Who is responsible for this sad state of affairs?
Clearly a MoD, which is incapable of sanctioning critical consumables like batteries in time or forever has to bear the burden. The file requiring the purchase of new batteries lay under process for years with the MoD.
Given these facts, your 'PROFORMA' editorial does no justice- either to your paper or to the Navy.
Time is at hand to name and shame the 'Politico-Babu' nexus of 'AAJ NAHIN - KAL NAHIN - KABHIE NAHIN'.
